“You won’t allow me to go to school. I won’t become a doctor. Remember this:...”
–  Poem written by an 11 year old Afghan girl  This poem was recorded in a NYT magazine article about female underground poetry groups in Afghanistan. An amazing article about the ways in which women are using a traditional two line poetry form to express their resistance to male oppression, their...

Today was shitty.
I have cramps for the first time in forever, and it makes me hate being female. AND I have to make a doctors appointment to get a follow up test (aka spend $30 dollars for no reason at all). I just want to nap until bed time but I have things to do. Trying to be a grown up sucks. Can I just be prepubescent again? Is that weird?

THE LYNCHING OF LESLEY ARFIN: WHAT REALLY HAPPENED →
So like, I don’t give a fuck about Girls. I may be a 24 year old white female, but I’m not particularly interested in watching whatever Girls has been advertised as. And I don’t want to get into the whole Leslie Arfin debate, so I’m going to try and stay away from that. But ugh this article give me a break. Not even just the ridiculous title, but this: …You can’t...

Ta-Nehisi Coates: 'Girls' Through the Veil →
There’s a lot of talk around the web about Lena Dunham’s new HBO joint Girls and its lack of diversity. Part of the problem is that those of us who fit into that amorphous space of “black alternative” or “Afrobohemia” or whatever we are called today, so rarely see ourselves represented creatively. […]  With that said, I think storytellers—first and foremost—must pledge their loyalty to the...

racetothestoneage: leftist-linguaphile: enlighteningnews: It’s much, much worse in Michigan than we even realized Last night, Rachel Maddow broke a huge story that has been happening since Republicans took over in Michigan in 2011 and has gone completely under the radar. Since January 2011, 566 bills have been signed into law. Of those, 546 of them, 96.5% were passed under “immediate...

Egos are the worst.
I work at an online retail store. And it’s always the assholes who feel the need to put a Dr before their name that make a big deal about nothing. I don’t know if they’re actually doctors of any kind or just lying, but these so called doctors fucking SUCK. A doctorate doesn’t mean they deserve special treatment. It certainly doesn’t mean that they can treat me like...

Which is as accurate as I will be able to get about this topic until I’m quite a bit older. But I had always generally assumed that having children is something that positively enriches the life of a parent in a way nothing else can? And so Nicole Cliffe’s article on On the Happiness of Procreation was a great read. On her six month old daughter: She’s LOTS of fun, but I...

My dream interview
Kruger: Your background is impressive George, but how does it apply to what we do here at Kruger Industrial Smoothing?
George: Well, at the Yankees it was all about smoothing things over, you know, chiseling away, grinding down. In fact we used to call it 'the grind.'
Kruger: It says here that you worked at Play Now for four days?
George: That should be 14, let me just...(corrects it with a pen.)
Kruger: George, I have to be honest; I could go either way with you...but what the hell, we need someone.
George: You won't regret this, sir.
Kruger: I don't care.
